Doing Something Sciency

Yesterday morning Isabel comes to me and says "Momma, I want to do something sciency". Um, okay. Definitely our child, but where the heck does she come up with this stuff (the answer to that is TV)? Luckily I had read this blog and at least had something we could do quickly and easily. We checked out what happened when we put colored water together. Then we used a dropper and dropped the colors on coffee filters to watch them mix. When we finished that she still wanted to do something sciency so we mixed finger paints and tried to mix pieces of construction paper to see if we could make new colors (we couldn't). All in all, I would say we had a very successful morning full of fun science projects and now Isabel can tell you what color you get when you mix blue and yellow...apparently the other colors weren't important.

If anyone has any other ideas for science projects for three-year-olds, let me know, I have a feeling this request might come up again.

I think I was her age or a bit younger when my mom taught me about volume by pouring water from one glass (something mug like) into another glass (something taller and skinnier). The fact that it looked different but was the same amount was very cool to me, although I do recall a big discussion about how it couldn't be the same amount - there were some drops left behind in the first one!

Also capillary action in plants can be seen by putting different things in colored water (carnations, celery...).

Love it!! What about homemade playdough or even something edible like bread. Kneading the dough is still fun as an adult. =D Growing seeds is cool too if Isabel will have the patience to wait.

We just finished a celery experiment in biology class. Scary that these kids couldn't predit what was going to happen. *sigh*
